Severance is an American science fiction psychological thriller television series created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle. It stars Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, Michael Chernus, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette. The plot follows Mark (Scott), an employee of Lumon Industries who agrees to a \"severance\" program in which his non-work memories are separated from his work memories.
The series premiered on Apple TV+ on February 18, 2022. It received acclaim from critics and audiences, who praised its cinematography, direction, production design, musical score, story, and performances (especially Scott). The series received 14 nominations at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nods for Scott, Turturro, Walken, and Arquette (winning for Main Title Design and score). In April 2022, the series was renewed for a second season.
A biotechnology corporation, Lumon Industries, uses a mindwipe medical procedure called \"severance\" to separate the consciousness of their employees between their lives at work and outside of it. Due to their increasingly divergent life experiences, the consciousnesses of the employees in the work place (dubbed \"innies\") gradually split from their consciousnesses outside of it (dubbed \"outies\"), to the point that they become distinct personalities with their own agendas. One severed employee, Mark (Adam Scott), gradually uncovers a web of conspiracy at Lumon, and the mysterious project the employees are unknowingly working on.
The COVID-19 pandemic postponed the initial production start of March 2020.[10] Principal photography for the first season started in New York City under the working title Tumwater on November 8, 2020, the day after the U.S. presidential election.[15][16] The opening scene of the show was shot on January 6, 2021.[16] The series filmed for a few days in Nyack in February and in Kingston and Beacon in March.[17][18] In April, filming moved to central New Jersey, mainly in the Bell Labs Holmdel Complex which stood in for Lumon HQ.[19][20] Filming was scheduled to conclude on June 23, 2021.[21] Production designer Jeremy Hindle blended corporate looks from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s for the show's distinctive look, and cited modernist architect Eero Saarinen as influential for the building design.[20] Stiller said the prop master reconstructed old computers so the actors could actually do the work presented on the show in order to get adjusted to the office setting.[22] These computers lacked an escape key, as a metaphor for the lack of control the Innies have while in Lumon's offices.[23]
On October 31, 2022, Gwendoline Christie, Bob Balaban, Merritt Wever, Alia Shawkat, Robby Benson, Stefano Carannante, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and John Noble were announced to have joined the cast for season two.[33]
The series received a rating of 5 out of 5 stars from Lucy Mangan of The Guardian and Rachael Sigee of I,[39][40] 4 out of 5 stars from Huw Fullerton of Radio Times, John Nugent of Empire, Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone and Anita Singh of The Telegraph,[41][42][43][44] and 3.5 out of 4 stars from Patrick Ryan of USA Today.[45] In her review, Mangan praised Stiller's direction, the writing, and the performances of the cast (particularly that of Arquette, Turturro, Walken and Tillman).[39] Sigee also praised the performances, especially Scott's, Arquette's, Turturro's and Walken's, and wrote, \"Severance moves slowly but surely, allowing time to absorb both the impressive world-building and stunning visuals, [...] [and] its breathtaking cinematography and design. With an exceptional cast [...], this is an original, weird, thought-provoking and beautifully crafted story that asks just how much of ourselves we should give over to our jobs.\" Fullerton also praised Scott's performance and called the series \"an impressive creation.\"[40] Nugent praised the direction, performances of Scott, Arquette, Turturro and Walken, and chemistry between the latter two.[42] Sepinwall also praised Stiller's direction and the cast's performances (most notably that of Scott, Turturro, Walken, Lower and Tillman), in addition to the production design, tone, and season finale.[44]
Shortly after its release in February 2022, people began wondering what to expect for a second season. The first season took America by storm earning 14 Emmy Award nominations due to its excellent acting and production. The drama series should return to us by 2024 at the latest.
When Helly (Britt Lower) wakes up, she finds herself in a conference room at Lumon Industries. She underwent a severance that separates her consciousness between her personal life and work life.
Helly threatens to hurt herself if she is not allowed to resign but stands down when she hears a recording of her outie denying the request. Petey died at the hospital, and his severance chip got removed. Mark undergoes a wellness check and reminisces about his late wife, Gemma. Helly hangs herself in the elevator shaft.
First things first: Every essential actor from the first season should reprise their role in the second season. There are also hopes that the elusive board of Lumon Industries makes a physical appearance in season 2. With the show's major success and popularity, there may be some rather interesting castings for that.
Did Milchick print the painting specifically so Irving would see it Milchick told Cobel he was trying to dissuade Irving from visiting O&D. Was that the \"266,\" or was that the hallucination Can middle-management induce hallucinations via severance chips
On Severance Season 1 Episode 7, things get heavy and philosophical thanks to the brief introduction of Rugabe, the woman who administered the severance procedure and now is responsible for reintegration.
In Severance Season 1 Episode 1, one of the things Helly asks is if she is livestock, to which Mark scoffs. But Rugabe is pretty blatant in that severance brings sentient life into the world to fulfill human's base desires without caring about their wants or needs -- sounds like livestock to me!
It's probably not healthy, but he didn't consider that he was hurting anybody. As clear as it is to us viewers, now, the ethical scope of severance is not something that many people seem to consider when electing to get the procedure.
It will be interesting to see if by the end of it all (or at least the end of the first season), Severance the show actually takes a stand in one philosophical corner, or if it merely presents the ideas up to the audience and leaves us to decide for ourselves.
You bet. In October, Apple TV+ announced that production on second two was officially underway. And on her Instagram Story, Lower actually shared a rare behind-the-scenes photo while on the set for season two. She simply wrote, \"We begin again.\"
As of now, there's no official release date for season two. A few outlets have predicted that it will drop sometime in 2023 (or even 2024) because season one took 16 months to film. But here's hoping we won't have to wait as long to reunite with the innies.
It is a spectacular finale, and season, and worth discussing at length with Stiller. Over Zoom last week, he talked about why he wanted to end the season at such a precarious moment (particularly when Apple had not officially renewed the show at that point), the casting of all these crucial roles, when we might see Season Two (which was announced earlier this week), and a lot more.
And also to do that when you were not guaranteed a second season That was a bold choice. I figured we were all in. Either we were going to be the most interesting and captivating one-season show, or we were making a move to force Apple to give us a second season.
Near the end of the season, part-time Innie Ms. Casey is removed from her role as wellness director and sent \"back down to the testing floor.\" In her last session with Mark, she reveals that her severed life has only been 107 hours long and the eight hours she spent in MDR was the longest she's ever been awake. Just when you think her existence can't get any bleaker, Milchick sends her down a dark hallway (the same hallway Irv's Outie paints) and she takes the elevator down to (what I believe is) the department Petey told Mark about; the \"one where you don't get to leave.\"
So much happens on this show that fans have largely forgotten to discuss the creepy, candle-lit Eagan shrine at Cobel's house. The concerning center for devotion and prayer contains a framed photo of Kier Eagan, a photo of a young girl in front of Myrtle Eagan School for Girls, diplomas, a waffle party-esque mask, a ticket to the 7th Annual \"Kiernival,\" a small model of Kier's home, and other Lumon/Kier-related trinkets and memorabilia. Cobel worships at the foot of the shrine throughout the season, and after Lumon fires her she completely trashes it.
At the start of the series it's believed that Lumon only severs people for work, but we learn that Gabby Arteta, wife of pro-severance U.S. Senator Angelo Arteta, underwent some sort of severance procedure before giving birth to her third child (if not before her first two). Devon researches Senator Arteta and discovers he supports the procedure's legalization and is involved with Lumon. And we see the political couple again at the Eagan Family Gala. Gabby tells Helly she couldn't have given birth \"without a little help\" and scoffs at the idea of people wanting to outlaw severance.
The finale left audiences off on a massive cliffhanger that has them all excited to see what happens to Mark and his co-workers in the next season. In anticipation of it, let's break down everything from that insane finale to Severance Season 1.
The biggest twist to come out of the last episode was that Helly R. is the daughter of Lumon CEO Jame Eagan. Her employment was part of the company's plan to convince the government to legalize \"severance\" by showing how much she \"enjoyed\" being severed. This explains why her outie was callous towards her innie and was committed to working at Lumon, but now that her innie took control at the company gala, she was finally able to say what had to be said. 59ce067264
